Jack Straw will meet Avon and Somerset Probation staff who manage difficult offenders in the community and support victims of serious and violent crime. The Secretary of State will also meet offenders, who through an education and training programme, are no longer re-offending.
A member of doorstaff working in Burnham is being investigated for not having a license. Officials from the Security Industry Authority and Avon and Somerset Police visited 5 venues in Burnham and Brean recently. 7 door supervisors held licenses but Officers discovered an eigth person's licence had expired. SIA Officials were called in after Police received information that door staff were working illegally in the area. Paul Cartlidge, an SIA Head of Investigation, said: "We were happy to support the police during this intelligence-led operation and action will now be taken against those found flouting the law. Door supervisors must renew their SIA licence in good time before the old one expires – there is no grace period between licences. There will be further operations to ensure venues and door staff in the area are operating legally." Police Neighbourhood Sergeant Ian Kennett said: “It is reassuring to know that the majority of door staff were working within the law and I know from experience that local door staff and licensees work closely with us and do a good job. I am determined to make our communities safer and by working in partnership with the SIA and other agencies to raise the standard of management in licensed premises, I believe we will succeed." Nailsea and Portishead Fire Stations have raised £2,867 for the DEC Appeal for Haiti. Fire fighters got their hands wet washing peoples' cars for a donation to the appeal for the Haitian Earthquake victims. Nailsea station raised £1,614 and Portishead raised £1,253. Speaking about the success of the car washes, Station Manager Rob Davis said: “This is a fantastic achievement for all those involved and I would like to thank members of the community and my colleagues for their generosity and support over the last couple of weeks. And A North Somerset youngster is back on our TV screens this month in the return of a popular childrens programme. Ten year old Noah Marullo from Flax Bourton plays the leading role of 'Gus' in CBBC's 'Tracy Beaker'. Noah's character Gus is a young autistic boy residing at the 'Dumping Ground' Noah said: “I had a fantastic summer filming Tracy Beaker in Newcastle and have made lots of new friends on set! I’ve always loved watching Tracy and so I’m really proud to be a part of her return. In the show I play Gus who has Asperser’s Syndrome and that’s what is so great about Tracy Beaker, it helps children understand that everyone is different and so are their circumstances.” At the tender age of 10, Noah who trains at The Actors Workshop in Flax Bourton, is already quite a veteran of the business having appeared in “Last Chance Harvey” with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson and as Billy, Stephen Mangan’s son in Channel 4`s hit comedy series “Free Agents.”
